What is a depeg?
A depeg is when a stablecoin trades away from the asset it is designed to track — for USDT, away from one US dollar. Most depegs are fractions of a percent and last minutes; a few have reached 5–15% and lasted weeks.

How a peg holds and how it breaks
A stablecoin peg is the issuer's promise that one token equals one US dollar, backed by reserves and a redemption right at par for verified customers. Arbitrage does the daily work: if USDT trades at $0.999, traders buy and redeem at $1.00, pushing the price back. A depeg is the market price escaping that mechanism, briefly or, for an unreserved coin, permanently.
The record so far: October 2018, USDT to about $0.85, recovered within weeks; May 2022, TerraUSD (UST), an algorithmic coin with no dollar reserves, to near zero,; March 2023, USDC to about $0.87 when Silicon Valley Bank failed holding part of Circle's reserves, restored within days. Reserved, fiat-backed coins have mean-reverted after every episode, as of September 2026. The episode-by-episode account is in USDT depeg history and warning signs.
Why it matters when selling USDT in the UAE
An OTC quote is the live market price minus the desk's spread, so depeg risk sits with the seller: the dirham peg of 3.6725 does not change, but the USDT leg does (see why the USDT/AED rate sits at 3.67). In a depeg scare liquidity thins and spreads widen, so a written, all-in price held for a defined window matters more than a marginally tighter one. Check where USDT trades on liquid USDT/USD pairs, not the $1.00 a wallet shows by assumption, before a large sale.
Illustrative example
Selling 1,000,000 USDT at a 0.25% spread, within the published bands as of September 2026: at peg, gross AED 3,672,500, spread AED 9,181, net AED 3,663,319. At $0.98, gross AED 3,599,050, spread AED 8,998, net AED 3,590,052. The 2% depeg removes about AED 73,000; the desk's entire fee is AED 9,181.
FAQ
Is a depeg the same as normal price volatility?
No. A depeg is specific to pegged assets: any sustained move away from the target price is a depeg by definition. Bitcoin or ether have no peg, so the term does not apply to them.
Has USDT ever fully lost its peg?
No. Its worst episode, October 2018, took USDT to about $0.85; it recovered within weeks. As of September 2026 it trades within a fraction of a percent of $1.
Can the dirham depeg from the dollar?
The AED peg at 3.6725 is a Central Bank of the UAE policy in place since 1997, not a market mechanism like a stablecoin's. It has held through every stress episode since.
Should I sell during a depeg or wait?
That depends on urgency. Selling converts at the discounted market price; waiting is a position on the peg recovering. Get a firm written quote first so you can decide on real numbers.
