What is fiat currency?
Fiat currency is money a state issues and declares legal tender by law, with no gold or other commodity behind it. Its value rests on the issuing government and its central bank. The UAE dirham and the US dollar are fiat currencies; USDT is a private stablecoin, not fiat.

How does fiat currency work?
By law fiat money must be accepted for debts and taxes in the issuing country; no gold reserve backs it, and confidence in the central bank holds the value. Some, like the dirham, are fixed to another through a currency peg.
The dirham and the dollar
The dirham is issued by the Central Bank of the UAE since 1973 and pegged at AED 3.6725 per US dollar since November 1997, a rate the CBUAE still maintains as of September 2026, which is why the USDT to AED rate sits near 3.67. Dirhams move by UAEFTS the same business day; dollars move between correspondent banks by SWIFT in 2 to 5 days.
Fiat vs USDT: who stands behind the promise
Behind the dirham stands a central bank backed by law and reserves; behind USDT stands Tether, a private issuer whose token holds one dollar only while its reserves and market arbitrage support that price. In Dubai the fiat leg runs through CBUAE-supervised banks, the virtual-asset leg through a VARA-licensed Broker-Dealer. Only during a depeg does a quote leave 3.6725 by more than the spread.
Why it matters when selling USDT in the UAE
Every sale ends in fiat paid into your own bank account, and that leg, the legal cash-out route in Dubai, is where regulation, settlement time and cost live. The number to compare between desks is the spread, published at 0.08% to 0.40% by ticket size in the pricing section.
Illustrative example
500,000 USDT at a 0.15% spread: gross AED 1,836,250 at the peg, fee AED 2,754, AED 1,833,496 in your account the same business day, or USD 499,250 by SWIFT. The full sequence is in selling USDT in Dubai.
FAQ
Is USDT a fiat currency?
No. USDT is a stablecoin issued by Tether, a private company; it is not legal tender anywhere and is not guaranteed by any state. Its dollar peg rests on Tether's reserves and market arbitrage, unlike the dirham, which the Central Bank of the UAE issues and defends by law.
Is the UAE dirham backed by gold?
No. The dirham has been a fiat currency since its introduction in 1973: its value comes from the state that issues it, not from a commodity. What steadies it against the dollar is the Central Bank of the UAE's peg at AED 3.6725, defended with foreign-exchange reserves.
Which fiat currencies can I receive when selling USDT in Dubai?
At IWGT the standard settlement currencies are AED, paid to your own bank account by UAEFTS the same business day, and USD, sent by SWIFT in 2 to 5 business days. Other currencies depend on your bank and are agreed with the desk before the trade.
Why are crypto prices quoted in USD rather than AED?
The US dollar is the main pricing currency for global markets, and USDT itself targets one dollar. Because the dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 per dollar, a USD price converts to AED by one multiplication, so quoting in USD loses nothing for UAE sellers.
