What is UAEFTS? The UAE Funds Transfer System, defined
UAEFTS is the UAE Funds Transfer System: the Central Bank of the UAE's real-time gross settlement system for dirham payments between accounts at UAE banks. It has run since 2001, settles each payment individually and finally, and is the rail behind the phrase "AED the same business day" in an OTC quote.
UAEFTS is the national interbank payment system through which UAE banks settle dirham transfers with one another in central-bank money. Each payment is settled on its own, in real time, by debiting the paying bank's account at the Central Bank and crediting the receiving bank's — which is what "real-time gross settlement" means. The name is an acronym for UAE Funds Transfer System; some bank documents expand it as the UAE Financial Transfer System, and both refer to the same rail.
Gross means no netting, so a large payment never waits behind a batch; final means the paying bank cannot recall it once the Central Bank has moved the value — see settlement finality.
The Central Bank of the UAE owns and operates UAEFTS. Only participants — licensed banks and certain other licensed financial institutions with settlement accounts — connect to it directly; a customer instructs a bank, and the bank is the participant.
It is not Aani, the instant platform for small dirham transfers: UAEFTS is the high-value rail with no customer-facing cap. It is not SWIFT, which carries cross-border messages between correspondent banks: UAEFTS settles dirhams inside the UAE only and never carries US dollars. And it is not an IBAN, which is the address a payment is sent to, not the system that moves it.
When a desk's confirmation reads "AED by UAEFTS, same business day", it promises a domestic dirham credit from the desk's own corporate account to an account in your own name, in full, with no correspondent deductions, on the day of the trade if the instruction beats the sending bank's cut-off. UAEFTS is a rail, not a fee: the cost of the trade is the desk's spread — ours is published at 0.08%–0.40% by ticket size, as of September 2026.
The system settles on UAE banking days, Monday to Friday, and each bank sets its own customer cut-off. For the procedural side — the stages a payment passes through, cut-off times and the banking-day calendar — read UAEFTS explained: how a same-day dirham settlement actually moves.
FAQ
What does UAEFTS stand for?
UAE Funds Transfer System — the Central Bank of the UAE's real-time gross settlement system for dirham payments between UAE banks, live since 2001. Some bank documents expand it as "UAE Financial Transfer System"; both mean the same rail.
Is a UAEFTS payment reversible?
No. Once the Central Bank has settled it, the payment is final. A payment to the wrong account becomes a recall request to the receiving bank, which is why beneficiary details are checked before release.
