What is a SWIFT wire? The term, defined for UAE settlements

A SWIFT wire is a bank-to-bank transfer instructed over the SWIFT messaging network — the cooperative that carries payment messages between more than 11,500 institutions. SWIFT moves the instruction, not the money: the funds pass through correspondent banks. In a UAE quote, "USD by SWIFT" means a cross-border dollar payment landing in 2 to 5 business days.

How a SWIFT wire works

The sending bank tells the beneficiary's bank to pay using a standardised message, while the value moves across nostro and vostro accounts at correspondent banks. SWIFT itself is a member-owned cooperative, founded in 1973 and based in Belgium; it is neither a bank nor a clearing house. A customer payment travelled as an MT103 message until 22 November 2025, when SWIFT began requiring the ISO 20022 equivalent, pacs.008; bankers still say "MT103 copy" for the payment record.

Each institution is identified by a BIC (ISO 9362), eight or eleven characters: institution, country, location and optional branch. A cross-border instruction needs the beneficiary's BIC plus the account identifier, in the UAE a 23-character IBAN. Every cross-border payment carries a UETR, so banks can see which institution currently holds it. Dirham payments between UAE banks do not use SWIFT: they settle the same day over UAEFTS.

Why it matters when selling USDT in the UAE

"USD by SWIFT, 2 to 5 business days" in a quote means the dollar leg is a cross-border wire through correspondent banks to an account in your own name. The spread is separate, and what lands depends on the fee code: OUR (sender pays all charges, you receive the full amount), SHA (each side pays its own bank, correspondents deduct in transit) or BEN (every charge comes out of the amount sent). Ask for the pacs.008 or MT103 copy and the UETR when the wire is released: together they are the paper trail for later source-of-funds questions. The correspondent chain, stalls and timelines are covered in SWIFT from the UAE: timelines, costs and correspondent banks.

FAQ

Does SWIFT move money?

No. SWIFT carries payment instructions between banks; the money itself moves across correspondent accounts that banks hold with each other. A customer transfer travels as an ISO 20022 pacs.008 message, formerly an MT103.

What is the difference between a SWIFT code and an IBAN?

A SWIFT code is a BIC — the eight- or eleven-character identifier of a bank on the network, defined in ISO 9362. An IBAN identifies your account; a UAE IBAN is 23 characters starting "AE". A cross-border wire needs both.

Is MT103 still used?

Since 22 November 2025 SWIFT requires ISO 20022 messages (pacs.008) for cross-border payment instructions, with automatic conversion for remaining MT traffic. Banks still call the payment record an "MT103 copy", and you can still ask for it.

What does "USD by SWIFT" mean in an OTC quote?

That the dollar leg is a cross-border wire through correspondent banks, landing in two to five business days in an account in your own name. The desk's spread is separate; wire charges depend on whether it is sent OUR, SHA or BEN.

Can a SWIFT wire deliver dirhams to a UAE bank?

A dirham payment between UAE banks does not use SWIFT; it settles the same business day over UAEFTS. SWIFT is the network for currency crossing the border — a USD or EUR payment, for example.

Need dollars or dirhams from a USDT sale?

IWGT is a VARA-licensed Broker-Dealer in Dubai (licence VL/24/12/002). USD settles by SWIFT in 2–5 business days to own-name accounts; AED settles the same business day. Spread 0.08–0.40% by ticket size, published openly.
