Receiving crypto-sale proceeds at Mashreq: what the bank checks
Mashreq books an incoming crypto-sale transfer as an ordinary inward remittance: free on NEO personal accounts, waived into NEO BIZ, and subject to a contractual right to block or query any credit the bank suspects. What decides the timing is the account you hold, the rail the desk uses and whether your identity and licence documents are still in date.

Which Mashreq account will receive the settlement
Mashreq runs four product families a seller might settle into: NEO current accounts, NEO PLUS, the Business Account tiers (First, Premium, Platinum) and NEO BIZ for smaller companies. The product matters because each carries its own balance threshold and fee, and the bank screens a large credit under the same rules described in our guide to what UAE banks screen for in crypto inflows before it appears in the balance.
| Account | Balance requirement | Fee if not met | Relevant detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEO current account | AED 3,000 total daily balance within the calendar month | AED 26.25 per month fall-below fee | Minimum monthly income AED 5,000; opened in the app with an Emirates ID |
| NEO PLUS | AED 50,000 total daily balance within the month | AED 0 | Outward UAEFTS and electronic international transfers at AED 0 |
| Business First / Premium / Platinum | Monthly average AED 50,000 / 150,000 / 350,000 or equivalent | Fall-below fee AED 400 / 550 / 650 | Mashreq Biz default daily transaction limit AED 5,000,000, adjustable by board resolution |
| NEO BIZ Pro / Pro Plus | None | Subscription AED 99 / AED 199 per month, zero fall-below fee | Free local fund transfers; credit into a NEO BIZ account waived |

Two threshold effects follow from that table. A settlement left in a NEO account lifts the balance past the AED 50,000 NEO PLUS line, which removes both the fall-below fee and the outward-transfer charges. On a Business Account the direction is reversed: moving the proceeds out again and dropping below the committed monthly average triggers the fall-below fee and, in the words of the key facts statement, lets the bank reverse any special tariff attached to the tier.
How the money arrives: UAEFTS, IPI, Aani or SWIFT
Mashreq's inward fee is the same on every rail, but the rails do not behave the same. Inside the UAE, the bank's local transfer page promises instant 24/7 credit for transfers under AED 10,000 through the Immediate Payment Instruction (IPI) system and states no upper limit for transfers to any UAE bank, which run through UAEFTS. Aani is free at Mashreq and pays into whichever account you set as the default in the app, but it carries the Aani per-transaction and daily limits, so a six-figure settlement travels by UAEFTS. From the desk side, AED by UAEFTS lands the same business day; USD by SWIFT takes two to five business days.
| Rail | Typical use for a settlement | Mashreq inward fee | What Mashreq publishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAEFTS | AED above the IPI ceiling, same business day | Free | Outward UAEFTS: NEO AED 1.05, NEO PLUS AED 0 |
| IPI | AED under 10,000, instant, 24/7 | Free | Outward IPI: NEO AED 0.50, NEO PLUS AED 0 |
| Aani | AED to a mobile number or email proxy, within Aani limits | Zero charges | Limits shown in the app; beneficiary must be enrolled; business accounts enrolled at opening |
| SWIFT | USD and other foreign currency into a multi-currency account | Free at Mashreq; a correspondent may deduct under SHA or BEN | BIC BOMLAEAD, SWIFT gpi tracking, more than 30 currencies |
For a USD settlement, open the foreign-currency account first: Mashreq Online creates a multi-currency account in USD, EUR, GBP and other majors with its own IBAN on the spot, and that IBAN is what the desk needs on the confirmation. Under SHA or BEN the correspondent's deduction shows up as a gap between the amount on the desk's confirmation and the amount credited, which is worth knowing before you read the statement.
A dated change applies to SWIFT. Mashreq's ISO 20022 notice says that from 15 November 2026 eligible cross-border payments must carry the beneficiary's name, country and town or city in dedicated structured fields rather than one free-text address line, and that saved beneficiaries need a town or city from 14 September 2026. An incomplete message, the notice says, can be delayed, held for validation or rejected. Give the desk your name, country and city exactly as Mashreq holds them.
What Mashreq's own terms let it do with an incoming credit
Mashreq does not name virtual assets anywhere in its published account terms, so a crypto-sale credit is handled under the general clauses. Clause 12 of the personal banking terms and conditions gives the bank and its correspondent institutions "the right to block the funds transferred to/for Customer's Account(s) in case of suspicion of illegal activity/money laundering/terrorist financing/international sanctions", and adds that the bank may decline transactions or close the account after notice on the same basis.
Clause 31(d) is the one that produces document requests. It lets the bank suspend, freeze or hold the account if it believes funds "have been obtained through unlawful means" or the account is being used for suspicious transactions, and in that case the bank "may require the customer to provide any necessary documentation to verify the legality of the transactions in question". The Business Account key facts statement carries the corporate equivalent: the customer undertakes to supply "all necessary or requisite documents in respect of the Customer's commercial and banking transactions", and the bank may restrict, suspend or close without notice when acting under financial-crime compliance requirements.
What the terms do not contain is a number. Mashreq publishes no amount above which a credit is reviewed and no turnaround for a review; the bank sets its own threshold, and an in-app notification or your relationship manager is where you learn a credit is under query. Nor will the bank say whether it has filed a suspicious transaction report, because tipping off is an offence under the UAE's anti-money-laundering law.
The sanctions declaration in clause 28 is also relevant to coin provenance. Mashreq states that it does not engage in any transaction, irrespective of currency, involving Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Crimea or the occupied regions of Ukraine. A wallet history showing an exchange or counterparty in one of those places is the kind of fact the bank's screening exists to find, and it belongs in your explanation before the credit lands, not after.
The documents Mashreq can ask for, and the ones that expire
The request under clause 31(d) is usually satisfied by the same file a licensed desk reviews before it trades: the trade confirmation, the exchange or wallet statements behind the coins, and a source-of-funds file that traces the money back to a documented origin. Companies add the paperwork the Business Account key facts statement lists at opening: a valid trade, commercial or professional licence, the MOA or AOA, a board resolution or power of attorney where applicable, a share certificate if the owners are not on the licence, address proof and the VAT registration certificate.
Mashreq is specific about expiry, and expiry is what catches sellers who prepared everything else:
- Personal accounts: the bank may limit access to Mashreq Mobile and Mashreq Online 60 days after your identification document expires, until the updated copy is shared; updating Emirates ID details from the authorities carries a service fee of AED 105, as of September 2026.
- Business accounts: a cheque book is blocked more than 45 days after KYC expiry; the account goes on debit freeze more than 90 days after trade-licence expiry; closure follows after 180 days.
- Under-formation companies are opened on debit freeze until a valid trade licence is submitted, so proceeds can arrive but cannot leave.
- Ownership: the key facts statement requires the business to be 100 percent owned by individuals, with no layered structures, which rules out settling company proceeds into an account held through a holding entity.
Larger or repeated conversions can move the review into enhanced due diligence for large crypto conversions, which means more documents and more time rather than an automatic refusal.
Illustrative example: 500,000 USDT settled to a NEO PLUS account
A seller holds a NEO PLUS account and sells 500,000 USDT through a licensed desk for AED. At the peg of 3.6725 the gross amount is AED 1,836,250; at the 0.25% spread band for a 500,000 USDT ticket on our published pricing, the cost is AED 4,590.63 and the net AED 1,831,659.38, as of September 2026. The desk pays by UAEFTS to the seller's own-name Mashreq IBAN the same business day; Mashreq's inward remittance fee is nil, so the credited figure equals the figure on the confirmation.
The balance now sits well above the AED 50,000 NEO PLUS threshold, so no fall-below fee applies. If the bank raises a clause 31(d) request, the seller sends the trade confirmation, the exchange statement showing the purchase of the coins and a block-explorer export from the exchange to the seller's own wallet. Nothing in this example is a promise about how Mashreq will treat a given credit; it shows the arithmetic and the paper trail.
Checklist before the desk sends the settlement
- Emirates ID valid, and for a company a valid trade licence: the expiry actions above bite before the money moves.
- Pick the receiving account: AED to NEO, NEO PLUS or the Business Account; USD to a multi-currency account with its own IBAN.
- Give the desk your name exactly as Mashreq holds it, plus country and town or city for any SWIFT leg.
- Keep the source-of-funds file assembled so a document request is answered in one round.
- Do not split one sale into several transfers; a pattern of smaller credits reads as structuring, not caution.
The bottom line on receiving crypto proceeds at Mashreq
Mashreq's published terms treat a crypto-sale credit as any other inward remittance, with no inward fee and a clear contractual right to hold and ask. The friction sits in expired documents, a mismatched name or a rail that cannot carry the amount. Settle from a licensed counterparty to your own name, keep the file ready, and you can request a quote knowing what the bank will do with the credit when it arrives.
FAQ
Does Mashreq charge a fee to receive crypto-sale proceeds?
Not on its side. The NEO schedule of charges lists inward remittance in AED or foreign currency as free, and the NEO BIZ schedule waives the credit into a NEO BIZ account, as of September 2026. On a SWIFT payment a correspondent bank may still deduct its own charge before the money reaches Mashreq.
Can the settlement arrive through Aani instead of UAEFTS?
Mashreq charges nothing for Aani and credits incoming Aani payments to the default account set in its app, but Aani carries daily and monthly limits shown in the app. A settlement of several hundred thousand dirhams goes by UAEFTS, where Mashreq publishes no upper limit for transfers to any UAE bank.
Can Mashreq block or hold a crypto-sale credit?
Yes. Clause 12 of Mashreq's personal banking terms gives the bank and its correspondents the right to block funds transferred to an account on suspicion of money laundering, terrorist financing or sanctions breaches, and clause 31(d) lets it hold the account and require documents that verify the legality of the transactions in question.
Does Mashreq publish a crypto policy or a review threshold?
No. Neither the personal terms nor the business key facts statement mentions virtual assets, and no amount is published above which a credit is reviewed. The bank sets its own review threshold and turnaround; an in-app notification or your relationship manager is how you learn a credit is under query.
What changes for USD settlements after 15 November 2026?
Mashreq moves to ISO 20022 structured payment data. From 15 November 2026 eligible SWIFT payments must carry the beneficiary's name, country and town or city in separate fields, and saved beneficiaries need a town or city from 14 September 2026. Give the desk those details exactly as they appear on your Mashreq account.
Is a Mashreq business account treated differently from a personal one?
Yes. The Business Account key facts statement ties the account to a valid trade licence, a monthly average balance of AED 50,000 to AED 350,000 by tier, and an undertaking to supply documents on the company's commercial transactions. It also says the business must be 100 percent owned by individuals, with no layered structures, as of September 2026.
